Taiwan-based art magazine White Fungus is about to launch a new experimental music magazine, The Subconscious Restaurant, with a tour of Asia. The tour will include events in Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taipei.
In Beijing, a launch event will be held at Zajia Lab, featuring sound performances by Wang Fujui (Taipei), Noise Steve (Taichung), and a dance perfomance by Zarah Killeen-Chance (Auckland). The night will also include performances by local artists Yan Jun and Rat 'The Spy' 51. People who attend the event will receive a free copy of the new magazine.
The Hong Kong launch event will be held at XXX, featuring sound performances by Wang Fujui (Taipei), Noise Steve (Taichung), and a dance perfomance by Zarah Killeen-Chance (Auckland). The night will also include performances by local artists Nerve, SIN:Ned, e:ch, Wilmer Chan, and KWC. People who attend the event will receive a free copy of the new magazine.
The Subconscious Restaurant is a publication and event series started by White Fungus in 2012. The first publication was launched with a four-city tour of New Zealand, introducing the work of Taipei sound / light installation artist Wang Fujui. Now White Fungus is re-launching the publication as an experimental music magazine for Asia. The new publication will be 100% bilingual, Chinese and English.
This issue includes an interview with the artist Lee Kit, who represented Hong Kong at the 55th Venice Biennale. There are articles about the Taipei sound artists Dawang Yingfan and Betty Apple, plus a feature about US noise / electronic musician Dominick Fernow and his projects Vatican Shadow and Prurient. There is also an interview with the Auckland dancer Zahra Killeen-Chance.
White Fungus began in Wellington, New Zealand as a free photocopied handout in 2004. The magazine is now based in Taiwan and distributed globally by WhiteCirc in London. In 2012 White Fungus was part of the exhibition Millennium Magazines at MoMA in New York. White Fungus has held dozens of art events at galleries and venues around the world, including P.P.O.W (New York), NK (Berlin), Taipei Contemporary Art Center, the Lab (San Francisco), Artspace (Auckland) and Adam Art Gallery (Wellington). This will be the first time White Fungus has held an event in Beijing.
Subconscious Restaurant editor Ron Hanson says they're really excited about coming to Beijing. “There are some exciting artists working in Beijing,” Hanson says, “and we're really looking forward to getting to know the scene better while building more cultural connections between Beijing and Taipei. We hope the new publication can connect to all the vibrant places in Asia and show the world how much is going on here.”
